Autonomy – “the quality or state of being self-governing” Merriam-Webster.
When news broke that the Supreme Court could be preparing to overturn Roe v Wade, many women and men across the U.S. were in disbelief. Could a law that was passed 50 years ago granting women the constitutional right to abortion really be reversed?
Research suggests that if the Supreme Court is successful, there would be severe effects on maternal health. For example, it would be substantially harder for abortion providers to aid women in need, a factor that would lead to greater maternal and infant mortality. Reversal of the ruling would also mean that the legality of abortion would be up to each state; if this happened, it’s expected that at least twenty-six states would ban/restrict access to abortion, putting additional strain on clinics located in neighboring states.
We’ve worked hard to ensure that the right to abortion has been preserved since the Supreme Court ruled on Roe v. Wade in 1973, and we are strongly against the reversal of this ruling.
We are firm believers that what people do with their bodies is their choice. It’s a basic human right and no government, and no one except the individual themselves should have any control over such a decision.
With the decision expected to come sometime in June or July, we want to do everything that we can to push back, and encourage a paradigm shift in the way people view women’s reproductive health. Women should have the right to an abortion, for any reason, anytime, and they should be given a safe space to seek such medical care.
We, as a group of web 3 women/brands/projects are raising funds to support women and their freedom by donating to Plan C, Keep Our Clinics, and Shout Your Abortion.
No donation is too small.
Web3 is built on the belief that financial equality should be ubiquitous, and access should be available for all – this belief system extends to human rights like those pertaining to women’s reproductive health. This is a unique chance to demonstrate the inclusive power of Web3 and showcase how the core values that live in web 3 spread beyond the pillars of finance.
PLAN C is an information campaign. Their mission is to ensure everyone in the U.S. knows about online access to abortion pills. Abortion pills are a medically safe and effective method for ending an early pregnancy – up to 11 weeks, and they are now available online through telehealth providers and online pharmacies. This is a powerful option for people without easy access to a clinic or abortion provider.
Funds will support Plan C research, pilot projects, and communications campaigns to change the landscape of abortion access in the U.S. This includes maintaining a robust platform of resources, amplifying strategic communications campaigns nationwide, engaging with partners, and sharing information with anyone who is seeking an abortion.
The Keep Our Clinics campaign is the Abortion Care Network’s latest effort to protect access to care and support independent clinics across the country.
Funds will be used to make necessary security improvements that will help keep patients and staff safe from anti-choice extremists, pay staff and rent, replace equipment, address building repair issues, and cover costs to maintain compliance with increased unnecessary regulations.
Shout Your Abortion is a decentralized network of individuals talking about abortion on our own terms and creating space for others to do the same, in art, media, and at community events all over the country.
